| I was a 2LT and was at Vung Ro from the beginning when we moved up from Cam Rahn. I was 2nd PLT Leader. SGT Stevenson was with me and was a great SGT. Tom Patch was another LT from St Louis. Would really like to look him up. A quick story about the night of the attack. I was sleeping in the officers barracks on the top of the hill in the corner of the hootch closest to the curve and guard tower about 30 yards below. I don't remember the exact time the attack started but I remember when we debriefed everyone, the guard in the tower said he saw a black clothed figure crawling up the hill towards the barracks to place a satchel charge most likely and actually fired on him. Had he not done that I believe I would not be here today. Maybe he will read this and try to contact me. I certainly owe him one. And upon further reflection, I think he should be awarded some citation for his actions. Not only was he not asleep which often happened, but he actually had the fortitude to fire his weapon. As support military men we were not use to firing our weapons at anyone at all. More later
